TOPIC: Reducing Electronic Discovery Costs

DESCRIPTION:

For many companies, a substantial portion of the law department budget is devoted to “electronic discovery,” a line item that is mysterious to most general counsel. Many companies have found they can reduce these costs substantially by innovating in the four key areas. Moderated by Tom Morrissey with Purdue Pharma, this session will focus on reducing discovery costs in each of these four distinct areas:

Identifying, preserving and collecting evidence

Minimizing data sets with automation

Analyzing quality and productivity

Optimizing document review

By analyzing data “in the wild” — prior to Collection and Preservation — without moving data; we can significantly accelerate the benefits of ECA for law firms and corporate counsel including:

Reducing the amount of data for downstream review

Formulating “settle vs. litigate” decision sooner

Collecting only smallest legally defensible data set

If you live or own a business in the State of Massachusetts you are probably well aware that beginning on March 1st, a new law takes effect which requires all companies to show they have implemented a technology plan that will safely and securely protect Personal Individual Information (PII) which includes: Last Name, Social Security Number, Driver’s License Number, Bank Account Number, Credit or Debit Card Number within electronic files or databases. Key provisions of the law direct companies that store Massachusetts tax payers’ PII to:

Limit the amount of personal information collected, how long it is kept, and restrict access on a need-to-know basis;

Identify records containing personal information, or treat all records as if they did;

Regularly monitor employee access to personal information;

Assess internal and external security risks and the effectiveness of current safeguards, upgrading as necessary;

Prevent terminated employees from gaining access to personal information;

Ensure service providers are capable of protecting personal information, contractually bind them to do so, and have them certify that they have a compliant written information security program.

Enforcement of 201 CMR 17 takes effect on March 1, 2010. If your business hasn’t yet taken steps to comply with the new Massachusetts’ PII laws, there is still some time. NuTech, in conjunction with StoredIQ and other technology partners are sponsoring a free luncheon on the Massachusetts Privacy Law on Thursday, January 28th in Boston.

Guest Speakers include:

Diane Lawton, General Counsel, Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation

Gerry Young, CIO Secretariat, Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation

2009 was an exceptional year for StoredIQ, having released the 5th generation of our Intelligent Information Management platform, added a record number of customers, and along with it a record amount of revenue, despite the ongoing recession and downward economic pressures. But with all this success, we haven’t been resting on our laurels. In fact, quite the opposite. Throughout 2009, we continued to make large investments in R&D and have been developing game-changing technologies, like the Just-In-Time Desktop Agent. But that’s just the beginning.

StoredIQ is once again attending LegalTech in New York City, and this year, we’re planning our largest exhibit ever. I have been to several LegalTech events, and they are always great conferences; but I am particularly excited about this one. Later this month, we’ll be announcing an exciting new solution that will change the way the industry addresses Early Case Assessment. We’ll be showcasing our new solution at the conference. If you’re attending LegalTech, we’d enjoy the chance to meet with you and give you a demonstration. Stop by the StoredIQ booth – #1405 or request a personal one-on-one meeting in our private demo suite. We look forward to seeing you there.
